HUG Meeting Number Two
June 19, 2007 on 9:29 am | By Neil | In |Well, the vote results are in, and it seems you really want to meet up once a month rather than every two months. So be it! In the words of Winston Churchill, “democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried.”
Amazingly, it’s already been almost one month since the first HUG, which means we should have a meeting next week. However I don’t think it would be fair to ask anybody to prepare a talk at this short notice. I quite like the suggestion made by Ganesh that we could alternate between more informal meetings — which could be as simple as a gathering at the pub — and more structured meetings with talks and so on. This also helps those who have to travel from further afield, as they may prefer only to attend the structured talks and skip the pub (or vice versa).
Therefore, I would like to propose a trip to the pub on Wednesday 27 June from 6:30PM. Is everybody happy with the Slaughtered Lamb in Clerkenwell, or do you have any other suggestions?
For the next structured meeting let’s tentatively suggest Wednesday 25 July. Please everybody send in your suggestions for talks — either what you would like to talk about yourself, or what you would like to hear somebody else talk about — or any other ideas you might have. Thanks, and see you at the next HUG!

I liked the Slaughtered Lamb, but I’m also for trying new things. If anyone knows another nice pub, I wouldn’t mind.

Assuming it’s not raining, any decent pub will probably be busy, so people will spill out into the road. The issue then is: is the pub on a quite road where this sort of thing is safe? The Slaughtered Lamb certainly was. On the other hand, their selection of real beer was limited. So, I might tentatively suggest Ye Old Mitre: http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/show.shtml/1564/Ye_Old_Mitre/Holborn
Possibly the easiest thing is to go back to Slaughtered Lamb this time and then debate there, where next to go!

I assume that any suggestion of consuming spicy food from the sub-continent is regarded as a terrible pun and never talked about?

The Slaughter Lamb is fine.
Last time we were supposed to have a quick intro where everyone said who they were and what they were doing. I’d really like for this to happen. Especially before the pub visit, so you know whom to talk to in the pub. Any chance of doing that next week, Neil?

How’d it go? When’s the next one?
I’m rather annoyed I couldn’t make it due to a prior engagement, but I’d be interested to hear how it turned out.
